American Express has been running these small business commercials on TV and actually, several of the stores MCMC is sold in are in it, including Fellow Barber and General Store in San Francisco. I’ve seen this commercial a hundred times, but today (during a little YouTube break at the studio – we may or may not have been watching the Bound 2 parody) I noticed that our Dude No.1 Beard Oil makes an appearance.
One of the funnest parts of owning a business is seeing which of the things you put out into the world really take off. A few years ago we released our Dude No. 1 Beard Oil. I had originally made this scented oil as a Christmas gift for my husband. He’s not into spraying fragrance on, so I made a spicy wood scent and put it in a fat roll-on bottle. Soon his friends wanted some, and eventually they convinced me to release it as part of my line. Together we came up the name Dude No.1, which is of course totally tongue in cheek. The Dude No. 1 Beard Oil totally took off, sparking the whole category of beard oil (which didn’t exist before!) and getting press in GQ, Vanity Fair, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Cup of Jo, Nylon, you name it. Seriously, it astounded me.
One of the things I kept hearing is how much people loved the fragrance – men and women! Finally, finally, three years later, we’re releasing our Dude No. 1 Cologne. Based on our wildly popular beard oil, it’s blend of three woods – Virginia cedarwood, creamy sandalwood and smoky Haitian vetiver – accented by spicy ginger and pink peppercorn with a heart of Moroccan rose.

We are so excited to announce that the Humanity Fragrance Third Edition is under way! Each year I volunteer with a different organization, and based on my experience create a fragrance to reflect the people and place, and feelings encountered during the process. The Humanity Fragrance series was born out of the desire to create fragrances that mean more to the wearer and maker.
This year I am working with a community organization in my very own neighborhood of Brooklyn (last February I was in rural Cambodia, and the year before in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico). El Puente is a non-profit organization that services the south side of Williamsburg. I am working with their summer youth leadership program by offering a perfume apprenticeship to 15 young women in the program over the course of six weeks.
This past week, I worked with the girls to write a brief, or the inspiration for their fragrance. I asked them to think about a person, place or experience that’s been important in their life. From there, we will choose ingredients to represent the various aspects of their story.
In the end, I hope to find my own inspiration from who they are and create the next edition of the Humanity Fragrance. So far I’ve met Stephanie, whose name means Crowned in Victory; Leidy who wants to become a tattoo artist; and Alba, who wants to create a fragrance based on the flowers of her hometown of Santiago in the Dominican Republic.

Also, this is the first time I’ve used my married name publicly! It’s been 2 1/2 years since José and I decided to go the hyphen route and I’m slowly integrating it in.
